Chile was governed by dictator Augusto Pinochet after the coup of 1973 and up to 1990. During his reign of terror, thousands of political opponents were imprisoned, tortured and killed. Resistance against Pinochet grew during this time and the world expressed its solidarity with the Chilean people. Future Express director Rob Hof was in Chile in 1981 for a three-month trip stay and was imprisoned by the secret service and subsequently thrown out of the country. Now Hof travels with the Future Express through Chile from Santiago de Chile via Chillan and Temuco. Train passengers tell Hof how the history of the resistance played out to the present, and how they feel about the present situation. Hof also goes off of the train for reunions with Chilean friends, many of whom were imprisoned and tortured in the Pinochet years.
